:pointr:Form of the Month:pointl:
The form of the month for February is the cinquain.

The Cinquain
****Cinquains****
Before Adelaide Crapsy developed her version, a cinquain had the same definition as quintain. These are both poems of five lines with varying rhyme, though most often forming the familiar 'abab' layout. Ms. Crapsy's version of a cinquain is somewhat different. While she was American, Japanese poetry was an obvious influence.
The style still contains five lines, but the syllables of each are strictly measured. The first and fifth contain two syllables apiece. Line two has four syllables, line three is allottted six, and the fourth line contains eight. This gives you a grand total of twenty-two syllables in which to express yourself. Rhyme is optional in this version.
An example of a cinquain:
Line 1: Thunder,

If you want to do an official write-up on any forms with a specified rhyme scheme, meter, and/or repetition, please note poetic-forms.  Suggestions on forms for others to write up are welcome.

The write-ups should contain a brief history of the form, perhaps an example, and a full description of the rhyme scheme, meter, common themes, etc. You will receive a  next to your name for accepted form write-ups.

We could use some help here.  If someone would like to do a write up for sonnets it would be especially appreciated.

There will be no Form of the Month, this January, as the month is nearly over and I have no winner from the last contest.

If anyone would be so kind as to vote or cast his or her vote again, whatever the case may be, on last January's bref double submissions it would be very helpful.

:pointr:Form of the Month:pointl:
The form of the month challenge for remainder of January is the French form, the bref double.

Write-up info: Bref Double
The Bref Double
The bref double is a French form. It is similar to the sonnet, but it need not be written in iambic pentameter (it can be in tetrameter, hexameter, or any other meter you prefer). The rhyme scheme is also different from a sonnet. The bref double contains three quatrains (four-line stanzas) followed by a final couplet.
a/x/b/c
x/a/x/c
a/x/a/b
a/b
The x standing for a line that doesn't rhyme with any of the other lines.
An example:
Road Closed...
With crystal rain, the sky is filled
with diamond flakes that swirl and dance
to tunes that they alone may know,
unheeded by the ears of man.
The northern winds play havoc with
mere mortal plans, as drifts now build
their buttresses of pristine white
as if to mark some hidden plan.
This land is decorated, chilled,
and sealed for all to gaze with joy;
see all the children laugh, so thrilled
to witness Mother Nature's show!
Though my intent lies thwarted, killed,
my smile grows broad at so much snow!

:pointr:Contest and Challenge Info:pointl:

For those of our membership that enjoy challenges, we have at least two a month.

Rules--
:bulletgreen: You may only submit one poem to each challenge at a time.
:bulletgreen: You must submit your poem via NOTE, as a link to the deviation.
:bulletgreen: Challenge winners are featured in a journal, and given the spotlight on our shoutboard.

Form challenges will consist of you being assigned a form each month, and writing on any topic, in that form. You'll be given two forms a month. This is a change! Since we have had very little interest in "themes" we'll go with forms and give you a variety each month.

At the end of the contest period, we as a group will vote for the poem we feel is the best example of the forms. The winners will be featured in the journal AND the shoutboard.

Word challenges will consist of you being given a word, or a few words creating a "concept" or "theme", and you'll choose any form of poetry and write something that goes with the word/s.

Form challenges will consist of you being assigned a form each month, and writing on any topic, in that form.

At the end of the contest period, we as a group will vote for the poem we feel is the best example of the form and theme. The winners will be featured on our journal AND the shoutboard.

-------OLD CONTEST ALMOST OVER

Our old contest will still run for September-- it's a poem, written in any form or style -- but the topic of the poem must be something to do with the hidden joys of summer.

Prize for the old contest: 3 month subscription to DA and a feature in the journal.

:pointr:Contests

From the poll, it seems like many of us want contests. We want a bit of competition. So, let's try something new for the group.

Word contests will consist of you being given a word, or a few words creating a "concept" or "theme", and you'll choose any form of poetry and write something that goes with the word/s.

Word for 9/10-9/24 Sacrifice

Form contests will also run each month, and they will be done with the form of the month.

At the end of the contest period, we as a group will vote for the poem we feel is the best example of the form and theme. The winners will be featured on our journal AND the shoutboard.

Our old contest will still run for September-- it's a poem, written in any form or style -- but the topic of the poem must be something to do with the hidden joys of summer.

Please NOTE me with the link to your submissions, and I'll add it to the journal.

(In other words, submit your poems as a deviation, before submitting it to the contest.)

Prize for the old contest: 3 month subscription to DA and a feature in the journal.

The new contest will be a poem, written in any form or style -- but the topic of the poem must be something to do with the hidden joys of summer. You can interpret this as you will, but I'm specifically looking for poetry that will give us a view on some of the joys of summer that are often overlooked, or forgotten, perhaps from summers past.

You have until the end of September. Please NOTE me with the link to your submission, and I'll add it to the journal. (In other words, submit your poem as a deviation, before submitting it to the contest.)
